Dr. Ioannis Zuburtikudis is an experienced licensed chemical engineer who works as a professor of chemical engineering in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Abu Dhabi University (ADU) and serves as the department chair. He joined ADU in August 2016, taking on the challenge of establishing the relatively new Department of Chemical Engineering at ADU after leaving the position as Professor of Chemical Engineering at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), which he joined in August 2012. Previously, Ioannis was a member of the Greek Academy, which he joined in 1998, moving from industry to academia. Before this move, he worked as a chemical engineer for Hellenic Petroleum Co. in Greece and a research scientist for Eastman Kodak Co. research laboratories in the United States.
Ioannis has received several research grants from the UAE, most recently an ASPIRE-AARE 2020 grant of approximately AED 1 million from the Hellenic Agency for Research and Development (GSRT), the Greek Ministry of Education, the Region of Western Macedonia, and the European Union Research Framework Programme. The research funds he has received as an academic amount to over AED 4,000,00 (USD 1,000,000). Thanks to these research funds, he has supervised Ph.D. and Master's students both in the UAE and Greece, published over 100 articles in journals and conference proceedings, and participated as a speaker in over 100 international and national conferences. Ioannis strongly believes in the importance of involving students in research. Therefore, he has mentored many students in Greece and UAE and introduced them to the adventure of research.
Ioannis has organized or co-organized international, European, and Greek conferences. It has been a reviewer for research proposals funded by government agencies and academic organizations in Greece and the UAE. He is a reviewer for many scientific journals in the field of polymers, polymeric nano(bio)composites and nanofibers, (nano)materials, experimental design, and chemical engineering. Finally, he has received numerous grants and awards, most recently a travel award from the (UK) Royal Society of Chemistry.
